Take-Home Horror: The Love Witch (2016)
Hey there, Creepy Peeps! It’s time for another DVD/Blu-ray Special Feature review and, as it is Women in Horror Month, I must talk about The Love Witch (Anna Biller, 2016)! If you want, you can watch my review of The Love Witch right here:
Of course, I have the Blu-ray edition of this movie, because I love it so, and the special features are as follows:
- Feature-length commentary with director Anna Biller, cinematographer M. David Mullen, actor Samantha Robinson (plays Elaine in the film), and producer/actor Jared Sanford (plays Gahan in the film)
This is one of my favorite commentaries to listen to – how nerdy must I be to have favorite movie commentaries – because it’s so informative! Biller and the rest of the cast and crew on the commentary talk about how the look of each scene was achieved and the difficulties of filming such a stylized movie like this. I especially loved hearing from Mullen, because he achieved so many look scenes just from manipulating the lighting and camera. One example of this is the frosted or colored vignettes on flashback scenes (which were achieved by putting Vaseline on the camera lens or a colored gel filter). The fact that no computer filter was used for stuff like that is awesome.
- Behind-the-scenes video with Anna Biller
This featurette shows behind-the-scenes shots and the actors preparing for scenes with a voice-over from Biller. Biller talks about how the idea for the film came to be, what she did to research for the film, and how she prepared set pieces and costumes for the film.
- Interview with cinematographer M. David Mullen
This is my favorite featurette if you couldn’t already guess from my description of the movie commentary. Mullen is obviously a very skilled cinematographer and he did amazing work with the lighting of this movie.
- Deleted and extended scenes
A staple in any movie’s special features section. Just some extended bits of scenes that were cut down and fun extras that hit the cutting room floor.
- Samantha Robinson’s dance audition video
This was a cool addition to the extra features, and I was interested to see it after hearing Biller talk about it in the commentary (during the scene where Elaine does a striptease for one of her victims, which Biller says Robinson choreographed herself).
I can’t find any concrete information about whether you can any/none/some of these special features in the regular DVD edition of The Love Witch, but if you’re a fan of this movie at all, you need the special features!
